Lyon Hosts 11th Edition of the Indo-French Astronomy School (IFAS11) focused on 3D Spectroscopy
le 19 octobre 2026
Lyon, France - October 2, 2026 – This week, the 11th Indo-French Astronomy School (IFAS11) took place at the Château de Goutelas near Lyon , gathering young astronomers and researchers from around the world for an intensive, week-long exploration of advanced astronomical techniques. The event was co-organized by the CRAL at the Lyon 1 Université and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, India, and was support by our OSU.

This year’s school emphasized integral field spectroscopy (IFS – also called 3D spectroscopy), a critical tool in modern astrophysics. Participants engaged in a series of lectures and hands-on research projects focused on reducing data and analyzing complex data from state-of-the-art instruments, such as the MUSE spectrograph, an instrument designed and developed by CRAL for the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile.
Over seven days, the students were hosted at the Château de Goutelas in the Loire region outside Lyon where they tackled challenging research projects on gravitational lensing, galaxy dynamics, and active galactic nuclei powered by super-massive black holes. Guided by instructors from CRAL and IUCAA, the students gained practical experience with cutting-edge astronomical software and data-processing methods.
IFAS11 continues its tradition of fostering collaboration between French and Indian research institutions while welcoming participants from around the globe. The 11 students of this year’s school represent a total of 6 different nationalities from 3 continents. The program primarily targeted PhD students and advanced master’s candidates, bringing together bright minds from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
The event was funded by academic and governmental partners, notably the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Scientific Council of the Observatoire de Lyon, making it a vital platform for the next generation of astronomers.Stay tuned for next year’s school hosted at IUCAA in India.
